Polgoon Vineyard & Orchard |
A decade ago Polgoon was a run-down farmhouse with land, languishing on the northern outskirts of Penzance, Cornwall. Spotted by John and Kim Coulson as a family home they have spent many years of hard work to transform it into an award-winning winery and juice business.

| Its broad, south-facing slopes are ideal for vines suited to a cooler climate, as well as a range of local, English fruit varieties. Initially drawing on the experience of the Cornish Camel Valley wine-makers, Polgoon achieved a remarkable victory when it’s very first vintage, 2006, won the trophy for Best Still UK Rosé, awarded by the UK Vineyards Association and presented at The House of Lords. |
 |

- UKVA Bronze UK Rosé 2007
- Cornwall Life Best Drink Producer 2008
- Taste of the West: Gold and Silver 2009
- Taste of the West: Gold & Bronze 2010
- Cornwall Life Best Drink Producer 2010

Disastrous weather conditions saw the 2007-08 grape harvests wiped out and no wine was produced. Happily the Orchard produce flourished and John’s attention turned to apples and pears.

The result, Polgoon ‘Aval’ and ‘Raspberry Aval’ (Aval is Cornish for apple) were the Taste of the West Gold and Silver medal winners for 2009. Both are produced like a quality sparkling wine using the ‘méthode traditionelle’ (a double fermentation just like the French Fizz makers use) and are characterized by smooth distinctive flavours and an extremely fine mousse of bubbles. New for 2012 will be ‘Aval Royale’ our sparkling apple wine with a squeeze of blackcurrant juice. |
| 2009 also saw the launch of Polgoon Peren (Cornish for pear). Featured on River Cottage, it has been celebrated by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and is on sale, alongside the Aval at the River Cottage Canteen in Axminster and Plymouth. New products have followed including Polgoon or River Cottage Branded Sparkling Elderflower Wine, made with the same production techniques as our other sparkling drinks. Wine production at Polgoon saw a great boost with the harvest of 2009, and Polgoon Rosé and Red, blends of Pinot Noir, Rondo, Ortega are in bottle and are selling well at our on site shop and through a range of stockists locally and nationally. |

| Recent additions to the product range are the award winning Cornish Pink, Cornish Black and Cornish Dry ciders. A new Elderflower pressé will also added in spring 2012.
